Our guild members created some absolutely wonderful quilts for the 2001 Piecemaker's Literary Challenge. We have dedicated this show to the memory of late guild memory and challenge participant, Barbara Sims.

"The Animal Carivan" by Frank R. Leet and illustrated by Fern Bisel Peat.

"I used a book called Animal Caravan that had a copywright date 1930. I traced the pictures and made my own applique patterns out of them. The quilt is hand appliqued and tied."

"Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott
and "The Frog Prince".

The final dimensions are 4"x6"..and the challenge for me was to piece on a miniature scale. It also has raw edge appliqué for the 4 girls. The other quilt was made from scraps of this quilt..and since I had the tiny bed and the frog button, I made it into the Frog Prince quilt..

"The Josefina Story Quilt" by Eleanor Coerr.

It's based on the story the Josefina Story quilt by Eleanor Coerr of a young girl travelling on the way to California and how the quilt squares she makes go along with the events that happen on the journey. It has been donated to the Booklegger program of the Fremont Main Library to use to help illustrate the story when the Bookleggers go out to schools to tell children about the book.

"The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

"Since this was a literary quilt challenge, I chose THE SECRET GARDEN by Frances Hodgson Burnett. After re-reading the book, I sketched on paper an imaginary scene inside the Secret Garden. I then divided the large sketch into smaller segments, which I then redrew in such a way as to allow me to foundation piece the quilt top. I simply numbered the pieces inside the smaller segments and started sewing! I then sewed these small segments together to create the large piece. There are at least two "boo boos" on the quilt top, one of which actually improved the picture. This was a fun and engrossing project--one I certainly would not have attempted without the Challenge Competition. "
