Maloney School Flower Pounded Quilt, Fremont

Maloney School 6th grade under the direction of teacher Sue Ellen Tomasic completed a grant quilt using a flower pounding technique. The students treated the fabric with washing soda and alum, then taped various flowers and leaves to the surface. These were pounded with mallets to transfer the color and shape of the plants into the fabric. Each block was completed potholder style, and a geometric shape was added as part of the classroom study. The completed blocks were tied together for display, then separated to become presents for Mother's Day.

A patriotic quilt made by 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in Melinda Pickens' Resource Class at Snow School in Newark is on permanent display in the school's multi-use room. After researching themes, the students drew and painted the motifs on fabric which parents and teacher assembled.
