February 2009
Feb 3rd Lecture -- Christine Barnes, "Color, Color, Color!"
This fast-paced lecture begins with
a look at the three color characteristics common to
all quilts and garments: value, temperature, and
intensity. These terms sound academic, yet they, as
much as color itself, are the key to making great
quilts. Learn how to use the color wheel to create
fresh, unexpected color combinations. Slides of
quilts from nationally known quilters are followed
by my quilts and a mini fashion show of my
garments. For more information see
http://www.christinebarnes.com/lectures.html
Feb 7th Workshop -- Christine Barnes,
"In & Out"
This graphic quilt is composed of 25 blocks, each containing four
quarter-units made from a variety of stripes, batiks, and hand-dyes.
(Students can use any combination of fabrics that contrast, such
as lights and darks.) The method for making the units is surprisingly
simple, and yields two delightfully different effects ("in"
and "out") from the pairings of two fabrics. The workshop
begins with a crash course in color, followed by step-by-step
directions for making the units and the blocks. For more information
see

March 2009
March 3rd Lecture -- Marjorie E. Johnson "Antique Quilts -
Preservation & Restoration."
This is a full lecture about antique quilts. I start
with some of the oldest quilts in my collection. I
discuss pattern, the time frame the quilts were made
and talk about what to look for and enjoy in old quilts. See

April 2009
April 7th Lecture -- Marie Strait "Successes
and Failures on a Fabric Diet (Trunk Show)."
Can you ever have too much fabric? Yes, and here
is what a group from my guild did about it. Find out
the rules we followed, our successes and failures,
and how to set up your own diet. A trunk show
accompanies the talk, showing some of the work I
did on the diet. See
http://www.mariesquilts.com/teaching.htm
for more information.
April 11th Workshop -- Marie Strait,
"Going Around in Circles."
Design a quilt from half square triangles, squares and machine
appliqued (blindstitched) circles. I will demonstrate a unique way
of creating and applying the circles. This quilt is a great
opportunity to use bigger prints. Students might want to consider
themed fabric such as Asian, or African. Sewing machine with ziz-zag
capacity is required. Appropriate for a quilter with basic skills.
